IWS03: New Over-the-Air Measurement Methods and Design Considerations for Millimeter Wave Antenna Arrays

Tuesday - 4:50-6:30pm

Moray Rumney

Keysight Technologies UK Limited

Moray Rumney joined Hewlett-Packard in 1984, and through the transition to Agilent and now Keysight has worked in manufacturing engineering, product development, applications engineering, and most recently technical marketing. His early focus was the development and system design of base station emulators used in the development and testing of cellular phones. Moray joined ETSI in 1991 and 3GPP in 1999 where he developed type approval tests for GSM, UMTS and LTE. He currently represents Keysight at RAN WG4, developing HSPA+, LTE and now the new radio for 5G. Moray has published many technical articles in the field of cellular communications, and was editor of Agilent’s book “LTE and the Evolution to 4G Wireless”. He is a regular presenter at industry conferences where he speaks on wireless technology issues and their implications on the wider industry. His current focus is on radiated testing and how this will evolve from 4G to 5G.

Pekka Kyösti

Keysight Technologies Finland Oy

Pekka Kyösti has M.Sc. in mathematics from Oulu University, Finland. From 1998 to 2002 he was with Nokia Networks working on the field of transceiver baseband algorithms and signal processing. From 2002 to 2013 he was with Elektrobit, Oulu. Since 2002 he has been working on radio channel measurements, estimation and modelling. He has participated in the channel modelling work in European METIS 2020 project and IST-WINNER projects since 2004. He has contributed to scientific forums like COST actions, and to several telecommunication standards like 3GPP LTE, WiMAX Forum, 802.16 and ITU-R. From 2008 to 2012 he was actively developing methods for MIMO Over-the-Air testing. He was moved to Keysight Technologies Finland Oy along the acquisition in August 2016. Currently he is working on channel modelling for 5G systems with Keysight and with the university of Oulu.

Riccardo Giacometti

Keysight Technologies France SAS

Riccardo Giacometti has been with HP/Agilent/Keysight since 1992 in various functions in Product Management and Marketing. Currently he’s a field application engineer with Keysight EEsof EDA based in Les Ulis, France.

Context

New challenges are facing designers of wireless transceivers and antennas as cellular communications move from existing frequencies predominantly below 3 GHz up to the lower end of the millimeter wave bands around 28 GHz and higher. Devices consisting of integrated transceivers and antennas require the adoption of new measurement methodologies in order to measure performance in a connectorless environment. Additionally, antenna arrays used for beam forming and beam steering require additional characterization, as early as possible in the design cycle. In order to cost-effectively test devices including large ones such as base stations, tradeoffs must be made between space, cost, and achieving the desired test environment.  We will explore these new challenges as well as new design and measurement considerations and methodologies used in a millimeter wave, over-the-air environment.

Workshop Structure

This will include keynote speakers who will discuss the following topics:

  • Over-the-air channel models used to measure in a connectorless environment and new considerations which must be made when measuring over-the-air instead of with cabled connections
  • Sectored MPAC (multi-probe anechoic chamber) based OTA test system for mm-wave base stations
  • 5G device test using a compact chamber
  • System-level beamforming architecture design for phased arrays
